In Argentina, the online gaming segment is gaining momentum as provinces establish their markets. The province of Cordoba is on this list and has decided that Betway does not guarantee the possibility of operating within its borders.
Cordoba has spent the last few months generating operator interest. He collected nominations from 10 outfits and revealed their names just under a month ago.
Among these were Betway and Betsson, which are already present in the country. Cordoba’s gaming regulator, the Cordoba Lottery, has now revealed that Betsson will advance to the next round, unlike Betway, according to the outlet. The Voz.
Surprise defeat for Betway
Betway probably thought it would have no trouble accessing the Cordoba online gambling space. She had partnered with Picapertor, a company run by the son-in-law of a senator and former governor of the province of Salta, Juan Carlos Romero.
The lottery did not provide an explanation for the rejection, providing only a list of submissions it approved. The other company to miss is SkillOnNet, which had already been rejected.
Cordoba has had to move the licensing deadline several times, including now. The Lottery expected to provide the final list of names on September 2, with time after that for rejected applicants to appeal. This deadline was to be September 16.
Everything will change now, and companies have two weeks to contest their refusals. Those entities still alive will also have the opportunity to justify to the Lottery why another survivor should be eliminated.
If this happens, the existing field of eight will decrease. This would be good news for others as it would increase their market share.
Loan for income
Cordoba estimates that its online gambling market will be worth up to ARS 16.12 billion ($113.05 million) per year. Although there is no information on which betting platforms and types of games the province will allow.
Once operators learn that the Lottery has approved them, each will present a list of games and betting options they wish to offer. The regulator will approve or reject the items, after which a timeline for introducing them will be created.
We know that they will not be able to offer the Quiniela, a product controlled by the Lottery. The range of remaining games, however, is very wide and includes sports betting.
In addition to Betsson, Codere, Intralot, SG Digital and four others with regional gaming experience also did the final editing. The final roster and potential play deals could be revealed by the last week of October.
