Care.com reveals parents’ plans for spending, tipping and hiring during holiday season

With inflation looming and the holidays approaching, Care.com surveyed 1,000 parents across the United States to get an idea of ​​how they approach the holiday season, from gifts and tips to gifts they want the most this year. While concern was high about buying gifts for their children (79%), parents still plan to tip the key people in their lives (76%) and many will even hire a holiday helper (40 %).

“Given current economic concerns, the parental stress of gift shopping this year was expected, but the number of people considering tipping and hiring help was certainly a pleasant surprise,” said Maressa Brown, editor of Care.com. “Parents continue to prioritize teachers and childcare providers for holiday advice, perhaps echoing the gratitude these workers have engendered during the pandemic. And for those looking to earn a few extra bucks over the holidays, there’s good news in the number of families considering hiring an extra pair of hands.

Care.com 2022 Holiday Survey Highlights

Higher prices are compensated by smart purchases: 79% of parents are stressed about giving gifts to their children this holiday season. To keep the season happy for their children, parents buy gifts during special sales (54%), look for promo codes and coupons (46%), cut back on gifts for friends (41%) and even take jobs secondary. for additional income (40%).

Holiday advice + hiring still in progress: Despite financial stressors, 76% of parents plan to tip on holidays this year, and they aren’t cutting back either with 43% spending the same amount as last year. Professionals at the top of tipping lists are child care providers (32%), teachers (31%), personal care professionals (24%) and elderly caregivers (20%).

In addition, 40% of parents can hire help to facilitate the holiday season. Babysitters (25%) and housekeepers (24%) are the most in demand.

Give parents the gift of money and sleep: 54% of parents want cash for the holidays, followed by gift cards (49%) and luxury items (22%). When asked what they really want this holiday season, 43% want a full night’s sleep, 40% want a peaceful meal in a restaurant with the whole family, and 26% want the kids to go to bed without a fight.

Moms want the spa, dads want luxury: Besides cash and gift cards, nearly one in four moms want self-care gifts this holiday, doubling the number of dads who say the same (24% of moms vs. 12% of dads ). Top of dad’s wish list? Luxury gifts rank first for 27% of dads versus 17% of moms.
