Brentford striker Ivan Toney is charged by the FA with more than 232 historic gambling allegations spanning almost FOUR YEARS – but there is no suggestion he bet against his own team

  • The requests relate to a period between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021
  • Ivan Toney, 26, played for Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford during this time.
  • It is understood that the investigation into the attacker has been going on for seven months

Ivan Toney has been charged with 232 alleged betting rule violations.

Earlier this month, Sportsmail revealed the Brentford striker, who missed out on a place in England’s World Cup squad, was under investigation.

And on Wednesday night, the Football Association announced it had charged the 26-year-old with misconduct “in relation to alleged breaches” of its betting rules.

The claims relate to a period between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021. During this period, Toney played for Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford.

It is understood that the investigation has been going on for seven months and there is no indication that the former Newcastle striker bet against his own team.

Toney was chosen in England’s last squad before the World Cup but hasn’t been used and has yet to make his Three Lions debut.

Next Sportsmail’s original story, Toney took to Twitter to post a statement. Confirming that he “was assisting the Football Association in its investigations”. He added that he “would not comment until this investigation was completed”.

Brentford also made a short statement. It read: “Brentford have been informed that Ivan Toney has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E8.

“The club have had discussions with Ivan and his legal representatives about this and these conversations will continue in private.”

“We will make no further comment until the matter is resolved.”

Toney has scored 10 goals in 14 Premier League appearances for his club this season.
