MLS Week 8 betting preview and play picks

FC Montreal vs Vancouver Whitecaps

Date/Time: Saturday (4/16) at 3:00 PM EST

We’ll start with the local Montreal team, which currently sits 9th in its conference with two wins, three losses and a draw. They haven’t kept a clean sheet all season and haven’t kept a clean sheet in 8 straight games since last year. Montreal concedes an average of 2.5 goals per game and scores an average of 1.83 goals per game. They rank 10th in shots on target per game (4.3), 14th in big chances (10) and have averaged 53.2% possession this season. Defensively it’s a different story, they rank near the bottom in goals conceded per game (2.5), saves per game (2.5), clearances per game (18) and tackles completed per game (7 ,3).

They host a Vancouver team that has also struggled defensively at times this season. They currently sit 13th in their conference with one win, four losses and one draw. Vancouver has kept two clean sheets this season and is averaging two goals per game (three goals per game on the road). Their offense is struggling to find anything this season. They’re averaging 2.5 shots on target per game, 0.80 goals per game and have created just ONE big chance all year. They hold possession averaging 41.8% and No. 18 is hit in the final third. There has been nothing in their offense this year and if they can’t do anything against the Montreal defense, then I don’t know what awaits them this season.

H2H statistics: The last four out of six games have seen more than 3 goals.

Pick: Over 2.5 goals (-130)

Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers

Date/Time: Saturday (04/16) at 6:00 PM EST

Houston enters this matchup having lost in its last four games. They average 1.67 goals per game and haven’t lost at home this season. Houston ranks 13th in shots on target per game (4.0), has created just seven big chances but ranks in the top five in goals scored per game. They have been a little lucky this year with some of their goals as they have scored 10 but have an xG of 7.9. Houston has kept just one clean sheet this season (hasn’t kept one in five consecutive games) and is giving up 1.2 goals per game this year. They are averaging 50% possession and rank near the bottom of possession won in the final third (18). Those numbers are much better at home as they seem to enjoy playing in front of their fans.

Portland, on the other side, currently sit in 8th place with two wins, two losses and three draws. They have scored seven goals in their last five games and are averaging 1.43 goals per game this season. Portland have received two penalties this season and have also created 10 big chances. They hold just 46.8% of the ball per game and average 3.7 shots on target per game. He ranks 22nd in the league this year.

H2H statistics: Seven of their last nine meetings have seen more than 3 goals.

Pick: Over 2.5 goals (-135)

Seattle Sounders vs. Inter Miami

Date/Time: Saturday (04/16) at 10:00 PM EST

The home side currently sit in 11th place with two wins, two losses and one draw. They are scoring and conceding an average of 1.2 goals per game this year. Seattle is yet to keep a clean sheet and hasn’t kept one in its last six but hasn’t lost a game in seven straight matches in all competitions. They rank 12th in shots on target per game (4.2) and have created just five big chances so far this year. Seattle ranks 4th in saves per game (3.8) and is averaging 48.3% possession so far this year. They gave up many opportunities but were sometimes bailed out by their goalkeeper.

Visitors Miami CF rank last in their conference (14th) and have also not kept a clean sheet in their last five matches. They have only kept one this season and concede an average of 2.5 goals per game. Their offense has produced just six goals in six matches, but they currently have an xG of 7.2. It’s not much of a leap, but it tells me they can produce better offensively than their numbers might show. They are averaging just 45.1% possession this year per game and have just 18 possessions won in the last 3rd which ranks 27th in the league. It looks like a high-scoring game as we preview MLS Week 8.

H2H statistics: This will be the first meeting between the two parties.

Pick: Over 2.5 goals (-120)

LAFC v Sporting KC

Date/Time: Sunday (4/17) at 4:00 PM EST

LAFC is coming off its first loss of the season against rival LA Galaxy last week. They are still at the top of their conference with four wins, one loss and one draw. LAFC averages 2.33 goals per game and concedes exactly one goal per game. They are unbeaten in six home matches and face a Sporting side who have not won an away game in their last six. Sporting concede 1.57 goals per game and average less than one goal per game.

The stats are as you’d expect with LAFC leading in just about every category, while Sporting, who sit at the bottom of the standings, are at the bottom of most stats. This one is probably one of my favorite games of the week as I expect LAFC to get angry after their first loss and want to take it to a weak Sporting team. Their last encounter saw LAFC win 4-0 at home and since then Sporting have gotten worse while LAFC have gotten better. This is an easy game to preview ahead of MLS Week 8.

H2H statistics: Sporting lead the series four wins to three but as I said, these two teams have gone in opposite directions since then.

Choose: LAFC -1 (-110)

Pick: C. Vela ATS (Anytime Scorer) (+105)
