In a bid to possibly stay one step ahead of the UK government, the Premier League is asking its clubs to vote to voluntarily ban sports betting companies from buying advertising space on the front of the shirt.

The vote should take place before July 21. The proposal as it currently stands would see no new shirt-front sponsorship deals signed with betting companies, and any existing deals would be phased out over the next three years.

According the bbc, the league emailed clubs with the proposal on Monday, and they hoped to have a decision within the week. Fourteen of the 20 Premier League clubs are expected to vote in favor of the decision.

The British government has floated the idea of ​​banning betting companies from buying advertising space on the front of football shirts. back in September 2021. The recommendation was thought to be part of a review of the Gambling Act 2005.

The BBC says that as of last week the government has yet to decide whether it will write a betting sponsorship ban into new legislation. But the Premier League’s voluntary ban “could offer clubs common ground and avoid any legislation on a very controversial topic”.

This common ground could also mean that clubs below the Premier League in the English football pyramid would still be able to sign shirt-front deals with betting companies, avoiding the loss of a source of revenue which the English Football League estimates to be in the region of £40million a year – and which companies could still buy pitchside advertising space at all levels.

In a BBC article from May 2022James Grimes of The Big Step, a lobby group against gambling advertising, said the voluntary ban would be welcome, “but remove gambling from shirts while allowing advertising on the pitch, at the League sponsorship and club partnerships to continue would be extremely inconsistent.

“Every young fan should be able to watch their club – in the ground and on TV – without being bombarded with advertisements for gambling, which we know harms millions and kills hundreds every year. .”

In the 2021-22 season, almost half of the 20 Premier League clubs had betting companies as front shirt sponsors. During the off-season, crystal palace quit a betting company and signed a deal with car dealership Cinch, but Everton and newly promoted AFC Bournemouth recruited betting firms.
