Where is online betting legal in the United States?


Online gambling is legal under United States federal law, but each state has its specific laws and limitations. Here is a list of all states that allow online gambling in one form or another:

Sports betting became legal earlier this year with only two legal sports bets in the state. This appears to remain the case for the foreseeable future.

Retail and online sports betting was legalized in early 2021. The state issued 20 sports betting licenses and legalized tribal sports betting. Sports betting has been online since 2021.

In 2020, about six months after voters legalized retail and virtual gambling in the state, Colorado became one of 18 states to legalize and have a functioning sports betting market.

Legal online gambling, retail gambling and online sports betting were legalized in 2021. Two sports betting went live just four months later, and this year online betting line have become open to the public.

Online poker is legal in the state, although all other forms of betting are limited to in-person play only.

Online sports betting went live in June 2020. Now punters no longer need to register in person at a bookmaker.

The state launched sports betting and betting apps in 2019.

New York
Sports betting became legal in the Empire State earlier this year. Online casinos and online poker may soon be available.

Sports betting has been legal since 2021, and current Ohio betting law allows 25 online sports betting licenses and 40 retail sports betting licenses. Unless there is a delay, sports betting will be launched on January 1, 2023.

Pennsylvania has become the largest state in the country to legalize sports betting. Residents can play online casino games in Pennsylvania and also place sports bets.

Rhode Island
One of the first states to extend retail gambling privileges to its residents, Rhode Island included online gambling in 2019. The state currently has two legal online sportsbooks.

Tennessee is one of the fastest growing markets in the country. It was the first state to adopt an internet-only sports betting policy when sports betting went live in late 2020.

Virginia launched its first sportsbook in January 2021 and has up to 14 licensed books to date.

West Virginia
Since 2019, residents can play online casinos and poker as well as sports betting on mobile devices.
